About Peter Irvine
Peter Irvine is a writer whose work focuses on Irish Republican political thought, constitutional questions and contemporary political developments. It examines the ideas and traditions that have shaped Republicanism and considers their continuing relevance in the political life of Ireland.
Originally from East Belfast and born into a Protestant family, Irvine developed an interest in politics, economic management and political theory through a long-standing engagement with Irish history, trade unionism and later the Republican tradition. His work reflects a particular interest in questions of sovereignty, legitimacy and political organisation, as well as the ways in which Republican, nationalist and socialist ideas continue to influence modern political debate.
Alongside longer essays on political theory and history, Irvine also writes on contemporary political developments and public debates as they arise. These shorter pieces aim to place current events within a broader historical and ideological context, examining how present circumstances relate to the traditions and ideas that have shaped Irish political life.
The purpose of the site is to both act as an archive of Peter Irvine’s writings and additionally to provide material for reflection, analysis and discussion, and to contribute to a wider conversation about the political past, present and future of Ireland.
