Irvine Calls for Defibrillator in Twinbrook Following BHF Warning
Peter Irvine, Aontú representative for the Colin area, is calling for the immediate installation of a public defibrillator in Twinbrook following the British Heart Foundation’s (BHF) identification of the area as one of the worst places in the 'UK' jurisdiction to suffer a cardiac arrest.
According to recent findings, fewer than 1 in 10 people survive an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in the Six Counties. Twinbrook has been labelled a “defibrillator desert” by BHF NI, with limited or no access to life-saving equipment in the area.
“This is a life-or-death issue. If a defibrillator is used within the first five minutes of a cardiac arrest, survival rates can rise to around 70%. Without one, the odds are low, especially in working-class areas like Twinbrook that have suffered decades of underinvestment,” said Mr Irvine.
He continued: “Twinbrook needs a defibrillator now and I’m urging local groups, schools, churches and residents to come together and submit an application to the BHF’s community defibrillator fund. I am willing to personally assist any group that wants to apply.”
The BHF is currently accepting applications for its defibrillator scheme, which includes the device, cabinet and support for ten years. Peter Irvine emphasised that lives are at stake and that West Belfast must no longer be overlooked when it comes to critical infrastructure.
“This is not just about equipment. It’s about justice and dignity for our communities. Nobody should be left to face worse odds of survival simply because they live in an underfunded area.”
