Irvine States Republican Response Needed to Immigration Crisis

Peter Irvine of Ógra Aontú Condemns Loyalist-Led Protest, Calls for Republican Response to Immigration Crisis

Peter Irvine, Aontú representative for the Colin area, has condemned today’s loyalist-led anti-immigration protest, describing it as “fundamentally opposed to the Irish Republican tradition” and “an insult to the ideal of national sovereignty.”

“Loyalist elements have no role to play in defending Irish communities,” Mr Irvine said. “These are the same forces who upheld partition, suppressed Irish identity and denied the right of the Irish people - Catholic, Protestant and Dissenter - to freedom and unity.”

While acknowledging growing concern around mass migration, Mr Irvine stated: “There is no doubt that the current levels of immigration, North and South, are unsustainable. Working-class communities are under immense pressure. But we will not solve this crisis by marching behind those who reject Irish sovereignty.”

He continued: “Aontú calls for a sea border for people - a sovereign, humane and controlled immigration policy for the whole island. Yet the loyalist organisations leading these protests have spent the last number of years opposing any form of sea border whatsoever, because their loyalty lies not with Ireland, but with Britain.”

Ógra Aontú is calling on all Republicans and principled nationalists to reject loyalist opportunism and recommit to building a movement rooted in unity, justice and self-determination.

“There should be no confusion.” Mr Irvine concluded. “The defence of Irish communities will never come from those who deny the Republic. It must come from Republicans, on Republican terms.”
